Queen Matilda
(1102-1167) Queen Matilda was a proud, smart lady that we lost at the young age of 65. Matilda was born in 1102 to the famous King Henry I of England. Also, in 1114 she married the Roman Emperor Henry V. Matilda although never crowned as Queen of England; Matilda played a big role in politics. Matilda succeeded the throne after the death of her father and remained there until recently.Matilda is famous for this because she is the only women to assume the throne throughout these middle ages. Matilda had a hard life. She often had to fight and argue with others just to go see her young son. Matilda died at Rouen, France. She was buried in Rouen Cathedral and her epitaph reads: “Here lies the daughter,wife, and mother of Henry”. King Stephen (1097-1154) King Stephen was born in 1097 at Blois, France. King Stephen was ascended to the throne on December 22, 1135 and was crowned on December 26, 1135 at Westminster Abbey. King Stephen was married to Queen Matilda and had 3 sons and 2 daughters. In 1135, Stephen usurps the throne from Matilda, Henrys daughter. Then, in 1138, Robert deserts Stephen and pledged allegiance to Matilda. David I of Scotland invades England in support of Matilda, his niece. Matilda leaves France and lands in England, then forces Stephen as a prisoner at the Battle of Lincoln. She is proclaimed queen. Stephen is free and defeats Matilda’s forces at the battle of Farringdon. Finally Matilda abandons her cause and leaves England. Matilda’s son, Henry Plantagenet invades England, starting a civil war against Stephen. In 1153, Henry and Stephen agree to end the civil war under the terms of Westminster. In 1154 King Stephen died. King Stephen was a great King and will be missed. |
King Harold II
(1020-1066) We have recently lost our king, King Harold II. King Harold II was born in 1020.He was born to King Godwin, Earl of Wessex and Queen Gytha of Denmark. King Harold II was ascended to throne on January 5, 1066. He was crowned King on January 6, 1066 at Westminster Abbey. King Harold II was also a focus for opposition to growing Norman influence in England encouraged by King Edward. In 1604, Harold was shipwrecked on the coast of Normandy. The following year, the Northumbrians revolted against Tostig. Earl of North Umbria, who wasHarold’s brother. Harold replaced Tostig, turning him into a bitter enemy. In September 1066, King Harold II, King of Norway, aided by Tostig,invaded England, but they were defeated and killed by Harold II on September 25. On October 14, 1066 King Harold’s army hurried south and met William in the battle near Hastings. A day-long battle ensued and Harold was defeated and killed which meant he was killed on October 15, 1066. King Harold II was a great king and will be missed dearly. William I (1028-1087) On September 9th, 1087 at Rouen, France William l died. He aged 59 years and 7 days. Yesterday he was buried at St. Stephens Abbey, Caen, Normandy. William I was a great ruler, who reigned for 20 years, 8 months, and 14 days. William was born in September 1028. His parents were Robert l and Arlette. He was ascended to the throne on December 25th, 1066.He was crowned on the same day he was married to Matilda, the Daughter of Count of Flanders. He had four sons, including William ll and Henry l and he had six daughters. He was succeeded by his son, William ll. William the first worked on the Tower of London. Most people in England thought of William I as an amazing all around person and ruler. |
